────── Kage Fadir ──────

Spring 40, 125

The elusive Mæntyger. It was hard to hunt something that could practically turn invisible with the intelligence and strength to stay at the top of the food chain. Kage wasn’t big on chimeric animals but there he was, looking at a piece of paper on his desk. It detailed such a creature that had been killing too many people and the worthless human hunters hadn’t been able to deal with it. Perhaps it had been forced out of its regular hunting grounds, or maybe it just needed to get twacked on the head and put in check.

Regardless, something had to be done. The last resort would be to kill the beast seeing as though they were rare and lived for thousands of years. The best option would be to have an animist bond with it. To that end Kage had sent out some letters to see if anyone would be interested in meet up with him in the swampy region of AElheim so they could try to bring it under their control.

Kage would step out of an inn for aelves late in the evening. His note would have said to meet him at this time on this day at this very inn. He already had his bird fetches scanning the surrounding landscape for signs of the Mæntyger. He’d been kept up to date with its general location and, if he was lucky, they wouldn’t have to walk more than several hours to find it.

Kage was dressed in a black and red tunic with a magical looking bow slung across his back. He had a quiver of quivers at his hip and was all alone. He’d been going through some housekeeping with his treants and had cut down on most of his less useful minions. He knew he ought to make more, but he was always busy with something or another.

So, going after a mæntyger was not a good idea when one wasn't a skilled hunter or skilled enough with a weapon to be capable of bringing such a beast down. No, in fact, it was a terrible idea. Stupid, one would say. But Milos was nothing if not—Well, Rúna would certainly say stupid, but he'd rather use 'adventurous,' and that attitude was exactly why Milos didn't take her with him this time. That, and the wisp insisted she was way too tired, although Milos doubted wisps just 'got tired.' In any case, he wouldn't be going alone on this little excursion, and, more importantly, they weren't really hunting the poor thing. He was supposed to bond with it and try to get it to stop eating random people or something along those lines. He could do that. Theoretically. He only ever bonded with one animal before, and as much as he was sure Pui craved his blood sometimes, the dælophosaurus was nowhere near as dangerous as a, well, mæntyger. Even if he was a very spoiled dælophosaurus.

Still, he couldn't just pass an opportunity like that. Not that the opportunity was for him, necessarily, but Ástra had heard about someone looking for an animist, and, like a good and irresponsible employer, she had mentioned it to him. So, there he was, navigating through the streets of Hespæria again, towards an inn where he was supposed to meet the guy who was going after the mæntyger. Then, they would set course to find the beast, Milos would sing it a little song, bond with it, and, with any luck, not get eaten in the process. He knows what to do, sure, in theory, but his bonding with Pui took a long time for both of them to even want it, and, well. He isn't really going to have this luxury this time around. Or maybe he will. Who knows. Maybe the mæntyger was lonely and would love to hear some stories and Milos would lose track of time and spend days in the forest—

Alright. Maybe he was fantasizing too much.

It took him more than he'd like to admit to navigate through the swampy streets and find his way to the inn where he was supposed to meet the mastermind behind this little operation. But he wasn't used to Hespæria, and maybe he had wandered off once or twice to check a particularly beautiful plant.

The important part was that he arrived eventually, not that late, and there was a tall man with white hair and beard with air of importance standing in front of it. Milos was pretty under-dressed in his own brown tunic compared to the man, but he could be practical. And he didn't want to possibly ruin his good clothes, so there was that as well.

"Hello, there," he called, circling the man to get a good look at him. "Are you the one looking for an animist? If so, Milos, at your service." He pressed a hand against his chest, leaning forward slightly and smiling as he greeted the other. "Pleased to make you acquaintance and all that. I'm not really good at introductions."

Kage smiled at this aelf named Milos. He’d never seen him before, which usually meant that they were very young or from a part of the forest that he hadn’t been to in a while. A quick glance at the aelf told Kage that they were likely quite good at magic, which was nice to know when going looking for something dangerous.

“Yes, I’m the one. You can call me Kage,” he said rather informally. Spending most of his time around military and espionage types made him welcome chances to relax a little socially. Even Milos’ tardiness didn’t bother him much. He was aware that regular folk weren’t beholden to strict time tables.

“Well, I guess we better get going,” he said, pointing to a path that he wanted to take. “We can chat while we walk. The beast was last spotted about a dozen or so miles that way and there’s no guarantee we’ll be able to find it today.” Kage didn’t want to disclose that he wasn’t a good hunter at all but he was confident that if they found it he’d be able to put an arrow through it before it mauled them to death. Hopefully it wouldn’t come to that and Milos would be able to use beast tongue to pacify it.

Assuming Milos followed along, Kage would ask him some questions to learn more about him. “I don’t believe I’ve heard of you before. Where do you hail from, and what are your hobbies? Also, what are your combat capabilities? You can probably tell that I’m decent with a bow, and I utilize Vitae so I have some treants in the sky helping with our search. I mainly want to figure out how vulnerable you’d be if things get dicey.”
